Held Racer Report: Leon Jeacock, Geo E Davies & Smirk Racing, National Superstock 1000

The Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit was the final destination for Leon and the Geo E Davies & Smirk Racing team in their 2018 Pirelli National Superstock1000 Championship season. On the back of the good form of recent meetings the team were very confident of a good result to end the campaign and also to build on for 2019.

Leon Jeacock, National Superstock 1000

Free practice one went well for the team and put in a time good enough for seventh position. The team made some adjustments for the second free practice session and Leon improved his time by half a second and took fifth fastest time. It wasn’t all good for Leon however as on his last lap of the session he crashed and got caught up in the wheel of the Suzuki, his leg taking the brunt of the damage. Despite this very painful injury he was determined to ride in the qualifying session on Saturday. He did a fantastic lap even with his troubles and took thirteenth on the grid.

The fourteen-lap race would be a trial for Leon but he rode a superb race. Making up a number of places on the opening lap he crossed the line in seventh position. He dropped to eighth position on lap two which he held for a number of laps. Losing another place to ninth he fought back in the later stages of the race and took eighth position at the chequered flag. This was a good result for Leon and the team after the accident on Friday afternoon.

The result leaves Leon in twelfth place in the final Championship standings. Speaking after Leon said “we had a great day Friday bar the last lap of free practice two where I was lucky to walk away from the crash, I wasn’t going to let the sponsors and team down though for the last race of the season and we battled through to get a great result of eighth place. I would like to add special thanks to all the sponsors who have made this season as spectacular as it has been”

Held Racer Report: Zoek Racing's Sean Neary, Ducati Tri-Options cup, Assen

ZOEK RACING ASSEN

The two Zoek Racing riders, Sean Neary from Lymm in Cheshire and Nottinghamshire’s Craig Currie from Newark were at Assen in the Netherlands for the final round of the Ducati TriOptions Cup where Currie recorded a sixth place in race one but crashed out of   the second while Neary crashed out of third place on the final lap of race one but fought back in the second affair to finish in sixth place.

Neary was determined to put on a good show this weekend in an effort to clinch the runner up spot in the championship and was very strong during free practice and qualifying to earn a second row start to the eight lap race on Saturday. As the lights went out he maintained fourth place on the first two laps before passing Lewis Rollo and then Levi Day on lap three to take up second position behind new champion Rob Guiver. He then entered into an intense battle for position with three other riders but held his position through the mid race laps before being overtaken by Day on the final lap. But it all went wrong at the final corner when Neary just clipped the back wheel of Day which caused him to crash and slide across the track into the gravel his race over in sight of the chequered flag.

Starting the second race from the third row Neary settled into a safe sixth place and opted for a steady ride which would consolidate his third place in the overall championship.

Neary said: “That is 2018 done and dusted and I finished third in the championship. We set out to win but third in any British Championship is not easy so I’m so grateful to these guys in the team. They are outstanding. Even when things don’t go our way we always have a laugh. Thank you so much. I need to do a big shout out to all my loyal sponsors who enable us to do this; Zoek Racing Team, Matthew Sanders of Zoek, Paul Nolan of Charlestown for his countless work behind the scenes. Evolution Waste, Craig Currie, JHP Ducati Coventry, Steve Jackson @Toiletspares, Chris Dutton of Claim Eazy, Motul, Joe Carlin, Guy Mainwaring of Held,Shark Helmets, Maxton, Lee Jackson, Applied Nutrition, Warrior Club, Tom Tucker Caines and the whole team for their hard work.”

Assen was the final round of the 2018 championship with the two Zoek Racing riders securing some strong performances. Neary recorded one win, two second and four third places on his way to claiming third place in the championship on 206 points while Currie, who was plagued with mechanical issues in the early stages of the championship, recorded his personal best result of the year with a sixth place in the first race at Assen.

Held Racer Report: Leon Jeacock, National Superstock 1000, Oulton Park

Leon and Geo E Davies & Smirk Racing returned to Oulton Park for the second time in the Pirelli National SuperStock 1000 Championship season. A real riders track that Leon enjoys and was looking to continue his recent run of good form and consolidate his top ten position in the Championship. Both free practices held on the Friday were in wet and rainy conditions.

Leon excelled in both sessions and you could tell he was enjoying the conditions as he posted a fourth and a sixth in the respective sessions. The team and Leon were confident for the all-important qualifying session on Saturday morning. An outstanding performance by Leon saw him take tenth position on the grid for race one. Another good opportunity to score some solid points again.

Leon Jeacock at Oulton Park

Making a great start in race one Leon made three places up on the opening lap and was riding well within himself and a good pace. Just off the leading group he held seventh position until late in the race when he slipped to eighth place and took eight points.

Confident of another good result in race two bad luck struck Leon and the team. Starting eighth in race two he made another great start and was up to fifth place on lap one and looking forward to moving further up the field. Lap three Leon felt a problem with the rear of the Suzuki and was losing grip badly and as he came in the first corner on lap five Leon crashed out finishing the weekend with a DNF, a result that his efforts certainly didn't deserve.

The final round at Brands Hatch in a months time certainly cannot come quick enough for the team to finish the season on a high. There is of course the small matter of Leon racing in the Dutch Superbike Championship very soon in Assen!

Held Racer Report: Leon Jeacock, Geo E Davies and Smirk Racing, Silverstone

Leon and the Geo E Davies & Smirk Racing Team rolled into Silverstone for the latest round of the Pirelli National SuperStock 1000 Championship. This was a weekend of considerable progress for the team and left with confidence sky-high. A change from the norm as the Silverstone National circuit was being used instead of the GrandPrix layout due to the MotoGP debacle a couple of weeks before.

Leon quickly settled into a good rhythm on the National circuit and was inside the top ten in both free practice sessions. Having found a good set up this all went out the window for the qualifying session on Saturday morning as it was held in wet conditions, however Leon put in a faultless display and took a brilliant fifth place on the grid for the first of the triple header race weekend.

Leon took a ninth place finish in race one after losing a number of places in the closing stages as his tyre started to delaminate. This problem would rear its head all weekend. Race two proved fruitful for Leon again as he battled hard and came in eleventh place gaining valuable points after more tyre issues.

Race three was held on Sunday and once again he was in the mix and put in a gritty performance as his tyre gave up laps before the end of the race. He made it a clean sweep of points finishes in the three races by taking twelfth place.

The outstanding performance of Leon and the team over the weekend have pushed him into the Top Ten of the Championship which is well deserved. Speaking after the round Leon said “Overall it was a great weekend for the team as it showed our pace and I am happy with the results despite the tyre problems which held us back in the races.

Held Racer Report: Sean Neary, Zoek Racing, Silverstone

ZOEK RACING SILVERSTONE

The two Zoek Racing riders, Sean Neary and Craig Currie were racing at Silverstone last weekend in the penultimate round of the Ducati TriOptions Cup where Neary from Lymm in Cheshire secured a sixth and third place and Currie from Newark an 11th and 12th place in the two races.

Ducati TriOptions Cup Racer Sean Neary
Zoek Racing's Sean Neary!

The racing was transferred to the short National circuit at the Northamptonshire venue because of problems with the International track normally used. This was because of the problems encountered two weeks ago which caused the MotoGP round to be cancelled.

Neary completed his qualifying in fifth position and began the first 15 lap affair from a second row grid position. But he was unable to match the pace of the leaders and completed the race in sixth position.

After some considerable changes to the bike overnight Neary once again started the race from the second row and maintained sixth position on the opening lap. But then he made his move forward and took up third place on lap two. Try as he may he was unable to make a pass on Lewis Rollo and although he remained within touching distance he crossed the finish line in third place just over a second behind his rival.

He said: “I cannot thank the lads in the team enough and Lee Jackson for their help in getting the bike sorted for me which gave me a podium finish in the second race. Massive changes were made to the bike overnight and it was so much better. It was a gamble but it paid off. I was gutted on Saturday as our team deserves better but I always give 100%. Thanks go to Zoek and our amazing sponsors for their support. I must also congratulate Rob Guiver for sealing the title today. I've shared a good few podiums with this lad over the last few years and for him to come back from a career ending smash last year to win it this year is unreal.”

Meanwhile Craig Currie was in good form at Silverstone and began Saturday’s race from a fourth row grid position. He rode well to claim 12th place at the flag to pick up another four championship points.

Starting Sunday’s race from the fourth row once again Currie made up places to 11th on the opening lap and soon became embroiled in a battle for position with Paul Slade and David Shoubridge. He passed Shoubridge on lap eight and began to pull away from Slade one lap later. He looked set to finish the race in 10th position but didn’t reckon on Michael Tustin homing in on him at a fast rate of knots.

With three laps to go Tustin overtook him and Currie was left to cross the finish line in 11th position to pick up five championship points bringing his total to 22.

The final round of the current campaign is at Assen in the Netherlands over the weekend of September 28-30 when both riders will be seeking some good results to end their season on a high note

Held Racer Report: Leon Jeacock, National Superstock 1000, Cadwell Park

The latest round of the Pirelli National Superstock1000 Championship was held at the highly challenging Cadwell Park, Lincolnshire. Leon and the Geo E Davies & Smirk Racing team were looking to continue the good form at a circuit that isn’t a particular favourite of Leon’s. It was going to be a tough weekend but at the end a fruitful one for rider and team in more ways than one.

Leon Jeacock, Geo E Davies & Smirk Racing
Leon Jeacock, Geo E Davies & Smirk Racing

Free practice one went well for Leon as he found a good set up and put in competitive

lap times and took eighth fastest in the session. The team and Leon were pleased with the result and knew they had more to come with some changes to try. Session two went even better and he went significantly faster and finished in tenth position, confidence was soaring in Leon and the team for the qualifying session to be held on the Saturday. Leon went faster still in the sole qualifying session, despite this with the class being ultra- competitive he set a time good enough for tenth, a great effort by all.

Enthused with his weekend so far Leon was looking forward to the race and as he lined up tenth he knew he had the pace to take a good result. Dropping to eleventh on lap one then fell a further place back on lap two to twelfth place, Leon though was playing the long game and as the race went on he was running a good pace and on lap nine he jumped up two places to tenth and was closing in on ninth at the end of the race.

Leon said after “Overall we had a great weekend, in the top ten fastest in all sessions at a track that is my least favourite, we as a team are now looking forward to the next round at Silverstone with relish”

Held Racer Report: Cadwell Park, Zoek Racing's Sean Neary!

ZOEK RACING CADWELL

After a four week summer break the Ducati Tri Option Cup finally got back on track at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire this weekend with the two Zoek Racing riders, Sean Neary from Lymm in Cheshire and Craig Currie from Newark in Nottinghamshire rode to two strong results in their races, Neary with a brace of fourth places while Currie was 11th in race one and 17th In the second encounter.

Held Racer Sean Neary, Ducati Tri-Options Cup
Held Racer Sean Neary

Neary completed his qualifying in fourth place for race one on Saturday but didn’t get the best of starts and found himself down in seventh place on the first lap. But he got his head down and made his way through to fifth on lap three. He began to reel in Josh Wainwright who was a couple of seconds ahead and finally passed him on lap nine of 12.  Although he did get to within half a second of Rob Guiver he ran out of laps and crossed the finish line in fourth place to pick up 13 championship points.

Neary said: “I had a clutch problem which put me back to about 15th on first lap then lost my knee slider! I managed to finish fourth but needed a couple more laps. Absolutely gutted as my team deserve to win but we gave it our best shot and we will try once again for race two tomorrow with a new clutch! Thank you as always to the team and sponsors.”

Because he registered the second fastest lap time in race one Neary started the second race from a front row grid position. He settled into third position on the first lap and moved up into second place on lap three. Lewis Rollo passed him on lap six and Neary suffered a huge slide one lap later at Chris Curve. He did well to control the bike at speed but on lap eight Levi Day made a pass on him, demoting him to fourth place. He continued in fourth place and the pair pulled away from the pursuing pack but he was unable to make a pass on Day and crossed the finish line in fourth place to pick up a further 13 championship points.

Meanwhile Craig Currie qualified in 12th place to start the first race from the fourth row. He didn’t get the best of starts either but fought his way through the midfielders to take up 12th place at the half way stage of the 12 lap race. He continued in that position and was all set to cross the finish line in 12th but on the final lap Nicky Wilson crashed at the Mountain bottom which elevated Currie up to 11th place to pick up five championship points and enjoy his best result of the current campaign.

Starting the second race on Sunday from the fifth row Currie circulated in 16th place for the first couple of laps but was beaten back to 18th on lap three. He passed Lee Devonport to claim 17th place and then passed Michael Tustin to move up to 16th place. He then became embroiled in a battle for position with Tustin and Devonport who both eventually got the better of him but with another rider crashing out of the race Currie was able to claim 17th place at the chequered flag.

The next round is at Silverstone on September 7-9.

Held Racer Report: National Superstock 1000 Brands Hatch: Leon Jeacock

Leon and the Geo E Davies and Smirk Racing team returned to Brands Hatch for round six of the Pirelli National SuperStock1000 Championship. The Grand Prix layout was being used on this occasion (the Indy circuit having been used earlier in the season) After two points scoring finishes in the last round Leon was hoping for more success on a circuit he enjoys.

Free practice went well for Leon, finishing in the top ten in free practice one he then applied some changes in free practice two, this coupled with the rise in temperature in the afternoon sun resulted in thirteenth place, but had a good set up for the stand alone qualifying session to be held on Saturday morning for which the grid would be set for the two-part race later in the day. Qualifying went well for the team and Leon took eleventh place on the grid which was a third row place.

Making a great start and tagging onto the lead pack Leon was settling into a good race pace when a mechanical problem caused him to pull out of the race which meant he couldn’t start the second part. The mood was deflated but the team knew they had the speed and set up for a good result in Sundays race.

Tenth on the grid for Leon once again gave him the chance to run with the leading group from the start and this he did. Making three places in the early laps he got stuck behind the sixth place rider for a sizeable part of the race and when he finally passed him the gap to the top five group was too big to bridge in the remaining laps. He crossed the line in sixth place which was his best result of the season for Leon and the team and they go onto Thruxton full of confidence and hoping to repeat this result.

Speaking after Leon said “we got the result we wanted, we came with the intention of a top ten finish and to get that after the disappointment of Saturdays mechanical woes where we couldn’t finish race one or start race two, the team are over the moon” adding “we move onto Thruxton now, another circuit I enjoy and we are aiming for a top five finish there, thanks to all the sponsors and team members for all their help hope they enjoy the result as much as I have”.

Held Racer Report: Zoek Racing's Sean Neary, Brands Hatch GP

ZOEK RACING BRANDS HATCH GP

The two Zoek Racing riders Sean Neary and Craig Currie were at Brands Hatch last weekend for round five of the Ducati TriOptions Cup where Neary rode to a brace of podium finishes, a second place in the first race on Saturday and third on Sunday while Currie was unlucky for his Ducati to suffer a technical issue in the first race but he bounced back to finish race two in 13th position.

Sean Neary- Two podiums at Brands Hatch
Sean Neary- Two podiums at Brands Hatch
Neary from Lymm in Cheshire completed his qualifying in third place and began the first race on Saturday from a front row grid position. He passed Josh Day on the opening lap and settled into second place behind Rob Guiver. Although he was within 0.2s from his rival in the early stages he was unable to pass him and completed the 12 lap affair in second place.

Starting the second race on Sunday from the front row once again, this time he didn’t make the most of his start and completed the first lap in fourth place. He was racing ahead of a group of five riders all challenging him for fourth place but he didn’t intend to give up his place without a fight. On lap eight he was holding fourth but challenging Day for third place with three riders in close company behind him. On the final lap he finally made his move and snatched third place from Day and very nearly took second. As they crossed the finish line Neary took third place but was just 66 thousandths of a second away from Lewis Rollo in second place.

Neary said: “Phew that was close! I had a problem in the early laps as I thought I had oil on the foot peg so dropped back a bit, but then I realised it was ok and pulled it together. By then of course it was too late but we gave it a go and we got a couple of podiums so I can’t complain.”

Currie from Newark began the first race from a third row grid position and was circulating in 13th place for a while. He was elevated to 12th on lap four when a rider ahead returned to the pits after receiving a ride through penalty for a jump start but Currie encountered a problem with the brakes and retired to the pits at two thirds race distance.

Starting the second race on Sunday from the sixth row The Nottinghamshire rider was down in 17th place on the first lap. On lap two he passed Danny Huskinson and was elevated to 15th when Paul Slade crashed out ahead of him. He then overtook Michael Tustin on lap four and chased after Dave Mackay passing him on lap six to take up 13th place.

Tustin also overtook Mackay and then snatched 13th place from Currie but Joe Morphett crashed out of the race gifting 13th place back to Currie once again which he held to the chequered flag to secure three championship points and equal his best finish of the current campaign.

The championship takes a break and returns at Cadwell Park in the Lincolnshire Wolds over the weekend of August 17-19.

Held Racer Report: Leon Jeacock, Geo Davies & Smirk racing, Snetterton BSB

The Snetterton300 track was the next port of call for Leon and the Geo E Davies with Smirk Racing Team in the Pirelli National SuperStock1000 Championship. Having tested there earlier, Leon was confident of a good qualifying and race result. He was hoping to continue with the excellent form over the past couple of rounds.
Leon Jeacock: Photo by Neil Pidduck
Free practice one was held in sunny conditions and Leon was in scintillating form as he posted a time to bag fifth fastest. He was more than pleased with that as a starting base and was looking to build on that in second free practice. The pace hotted up in free practice two although he quicker again he fell to eighth place.
The team and Leon were feeling confident for the sole qualifying session on Saturday. He was aiming for a top ten grid slot and he achieved this going quicker again with a time of 1 minute 50.890 seconds and this placed him tenth on the starting grid of Sundays race. Making a good start in the race Leon held his position in the first lap bumping and boring and then all the weekends good work came to an abrupt end. Making a move to take seventh position on lap two Leon had a high side and crashed out of the race ending his point scoring run in a heap.
Speaking after the race Leon said “Snetterton has been another major step forward for us as a team, we haven’t been out of the top ten throughout free practice and qualifying and I felt strong on the Suzuki which led to my downfall in the race as I probably pushed to hard in the race causing the high side” “We go to Knockhill full of confidence and we are looking to getting back in the points again” he added that he wanted to thank all his sponsors for their continued support.

Held Racer Report: Sean Neary, Zoek Racing, Snetterton

ZOEK RACING SNETTERTON

Snetterton played host to round four of the Ducati TriOptions Cup this week with Sean Neary finishing his first race in fourth place but retiring from race two with a technical issue.

Ducati Tri-Options Cup racer Sean Neary

His Zoek Racing team mate Craig Currie was 14th in race one and 13th in the second race.

After qualifying on pole position for the first race, Lymm rider Sean Neary didn’t get the best of starts and completed the first of two laps in race one on Saturday in third place. Phil Atkinson demoted him to fourth on lap three but Neary powered back past to reclaim third one lap later. But his progress was short lived as on lap six Atkinson went past again and although there was less than half a second separating the two riders the red flag brought the race to a halt on lap eight and a result declared on positions on lap seven.

Neary commented: “The race didn’t go our way today as it was cut short which didn’t do us any favours for a podium however we didn’t have the pace to win.”

Neary lined up on the front row for race two on Sunday morning but things didn’t quite go to plan as, although he was running in fourth place for the first few laps he was forced to retire at half race distance with a technical issue. He said: “As race weekends go it was pretty poor!!  A technical issue with the bike meant we didn’t finish race two. Not ideal but on the positive side it can always be worse! We will work hard and come back strong for Brands Hatch. Thanks to the team for all their hard work.”

With a non finish to his second race Neary has lost his series lead but is holding a strong second place on 108 points.

Meanwhile Newark rider Craig Currie went well during qualifying to start the first race from the middle of the second row. He held eighth place on lap one but began to drop back and completed the 10 lap affair in 14th place to pick up two championship points.

Starting race two on Sunday from the fifth row it was always going to be a challenge to get up into the top 10 but Currie made headway and completed the race in 13th place to secure another three championship points.

Snetterton was a positive weekend for the Nottinghamshire rider as he got his first points of the new season on board and has made good progress with the Ducati.

The next round is at Brands Hatch over the weekend of July 20-22 when both Zoek riders will be seeking strong results to boost their points tally with Neary looking to regain his series lead and Currie to move further up the standings.
